Are you worried about your furnace or boiler being old?
Looking to see the benefits of replacing your furnace? It can be hard to tell if your heating and cooling unit is about to end its life cycle. We decided to put together a small checklist so you don’t get caught out in the cold. The benefits of replacing your furnace also pointed out, incase you think your existing unit needs to be replaced.
If you think you need to replace your furnace, the following tips will you find out.
How Old Is Your Furnace?
Determining the age of your furnace is the first step in knowing about your furnace needs. Typical furnaces have a life cycle of about 15 – 20 years before needing replacement. If a furnace is properly maintained it should last its full life cycle. To find out the age of your furnace you can check the manufacturer date or the serial number. Locating this information requires a few steps.
- Turn off your furnace. There should be a switch on most models.
- Remove the access door from the units exterior.
- The serial number or date is located inside the access area. You should use a flashlight.
- If there is no manufacture date and only a serial number, the date can be found in the serial number. Use the first four numbers. The first two numbers stand for the week of the year and the second two represent the year it was made.
If your furnace is near or around 15 years, then you may need a replacement furnace sooner than later. This can give you time to prepare your finances, gather information, research the benefits of replacing your old furnace and schedule an appropriate time for replacement. Your furnace may be a newer model not needing replacement but if it is malfunctioning, a service repair will most likely solve your issue.
You should also know what type of system your furnace is operating with, such a ducts and venting, central air, ductless and if any part of your system has been repaired or updated.
This can help identify problems that are part of your furnace system that could affect your furnace’s performance.
Make Your Existing Furnace Last Longer
With a few tips about preventative maintenance you can help prevent costly repairs and extend the life of your furnace. These tips are simple to follow, easy-to-do and don’t require much time. It is recommended to perform these checks every 4 – 6 months.
Keep your furnace area and vents clear of debris. This involves both the areas around the furnace itself and any external venting outside the house.
Keep the level of dust on your unit down by occasionally cleaning the outside of the unit. If you do not feel comfortable doing this hire an expert to do preventative maintenance.
Adjust thermostat levels to allow the furnace and blower to rest. When your unit and its components are constantly running, your unit’s life span will be short. If your home in not warm, then you may have another problem or your unit may not be large enough or efficient enough.
Thermostat location is also important. You should not have your thermostat located in direct sunlight or next to a heat source. A technician can move your thermostat if it is too close to a heat source. You could also upgrade to a modern thermostat, giving you more options on your heating and cooling control.
